Dynamite Leave Open Cup with a Bang

Fused by Carey’s Four Goal Performance

Where were you at 8:43pm last Friday night? The Denver Dynamite was loading up into rental vehicles to begin the 14-hour trek to Texas to take on Vitesse Dallas in their quarterfinal match-up of the US Arena Open Cup.

Denver and Dallas were the last two teams left in the tournament that were not in the PASL -Pro division. Scheduling mix-ups and health concerns may have put a damper on some teams, but not the Denver Dynamite. Eleven players headed east on I-70 to southbound I-35, full of confidence. After driving overnight, the team arrived at the hotel in time for a quick power nap before the 8:00pm kickoff on Saturday night.

The game began with plenty of high pressure by the Dynamite players, who were running around with an unusual amount of oxygen in the air. Travis Carey started the scoring shortly into the first quarter after high pressure and a take away by Dan Millard on the Vitesse defender. Unfortunately, a few defensive miscues led to Vitesse Dallas taking a 3-1 lead into the first break.

Vitesse added a fourth straight goal in the opening minute of the second quarter. Denver controlled much of the second quarter but couldn’t capitalize until Greg Borchers was taken out by Vitesse keeper, just outside the goal box. Millard smashed home the free kick from the right edge of the box to narrow the Vitesse lead to 4-2. But similar to the first quarter, Vitesse added a couple late goals and took a 6-2 lead into half time.

Denver came out to start the third quarter with a few changes, hoping the score would begin to imitate the flow of the game. Carey answered Vitesse’s seventh goal by slotting home a Brett Thomas pass, and then completed his hat trick on the power play by a Borchers cross. Dallas, not to be outdone, added another goal to make it 8-4 after three quarters.

The fourth quarter started the same way the previous quarters did, with a Vitesse goal to the cheers of the home crowd. Carey felt a hat trick wasn’t good enough and added a fourth goal midway through the final period with a high pressure turnover and quick finish. Fernando Yepes got into the score book with another high pressure Dynamite goal as he put his body in the way of a clearance in front of the Vitesse net that closed the gap to 9-6.

Vitesse’s coach was forced to take his final timeout after the Dynamite narrowed the lead and cheers erupted from members of the Bomb Squad cheering section. “With just over five minutes left in the game, and a back down to three goal deficit, we knew the momentum had started to change and hoped some extra risks would lead to tieng up the game.” Captain Dan Millard. Unfortunately, the risks did not pay off, and Vitesse was able to end the Dynamite’s run in this year’s Cup with two more late scores. When the final buzzer rang, the scoreboard read 11-6. It may not have been the result that Denver was looking for, but the Dynamite went out with a Bang!
